8 Facts About the NFL Super Bowl

On Sunday the 7th February 2010 the 44th NFL SuperBowl competition takes place. This is a very important sporting event for not just millions of Americans in the USA but around the world. In fact of all live television broadcasts that take place in the USA during the year this is the event that is watched the most. But as well as being the most watched during the game this is when the most food following Thanksgiving Day will be consumed.

But along with the facts provided above there are some more you might be interested to learn about. Below we take a look at just what some of these are.

Fact 1 - The name Super Bowl was coined by Lamar Hunt who use to own the Kansas City Chief after watching his children in his yard playing with a Super Ball.

Fact 2 - As you will see when the Super Bowl is advertised on TV Roman Numerals are used to identify what number game is to be played rather than for the year in which it is being held. So when the first Super Bowl was played this was known as Super Bowl I as for this weekend's this is identified as being NFL Super Bowl XLIV.

Fact 3 - The game that is played this coming Sunday is the one that will determine who is actually the champion overall of the 2009 American Football regular season.

Fact 4 - The team which has won this title more than any other is the Pittsburgh Steelers who have been Champions six times. However, there are two teams who have won this title five times and they are the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers.

Fact 5 - As well as winning the title five times the Dallas Cowboys are also the team that have appeared in the most games. Since it began this team has competed for winning the NFL Super Bowl title eight times.

Fact 6 - This year the game again will take place in Florida and is to be held at the Sun Life Stadium, Miami Gardens. Since the Super Bowl began the final has taken place 10 times in South Florida. Five times at the Sun Life Stadium home to the Miami Dolphins and five times at the Orange Bowl which has now been demolished.

Fact 7 - Before the game commences it is customary for the American National Anthem and America the Beautiful to be sung. This year the honors go to Queen Latifah and Carrie Underwood. Whilst to keep the fan entertained during the half time interval The Who will be performing.

Fact 8 - Any company wishing to air commercials during the breaks in the game are expected to pay around 2.8 million dollars to do so. The reason that these costs to place commercials is so high is because the number of people who are expected to watch the match on TV.




Despite being one of the most popular events of the year in the USA, the Super Bowl hasn't quite taken off in the same way across the pond in the United Kingdom. However things are moving along slightly with some NFL games actually being played at Wembley Stadium in London and more UK people watching the Super Bowl on TV.
